Be it for the traces of the Habsburg or the Roman, the history of water or of gardens, let yourself be inspired for an excursion, a stop-over or a stay of several days in this region. There is so much history to be experienced in these unique places and gastronomic adventures to be lived. The canton of Aargau holds many surprises.

Aarau – City of beautiful gables

Aarau is embedded between soft forested hills, dreaming countryside and the picturesque Jura mountain chain. The Aare river is the longest river flowing only within Switzerland and the biggest water contribution to the Rhine! The city’s walls are as high as four floors and were enlarged in the 14th century. Many houses date from late gothic times. More than 70 gable paintings decorate the streets. In November, the city holds its traditional carrot market, displaying carrots of many shapes and colors.

Not far from here, in Schönenwerd, the Bally Shoe museum presents one of the biggest shoes collections of the world from many countries and centuries.
